Meeting with Dr. Josh Silvertown and Dr. Sherin Al-Safadi from Bayer Canada, Oct 2018

The short-term objective of the NSERC CREATE Training Program in BioActives is to graduate trainees with a portfolio of experiences and expertise such that they are career-ready for employment and economic opportunities that feature bioactives at the mission core. Such opportunities lie mostly outside academia, e.g., industry, government labs, policy, private sector (patent law). BioActives trainees will gain insight into the operations and impact of these employment sectors, thus preparing them to make informed decisions related to career paths and being competitive in the employment market.

Long-term objectives

The long-team objective of the NSERC CREATE Training Program in BioActives is to graduate researchers with the ability to influence the use of bioactive chemicals to meet unmet needs such as strong-yet-biodegradable materials, responsible crop protection and the rise of drug-resistant bacteria. In this way, in addition to being competitive candidates for lab-based and management employment, BioActives graduates will have the skills and support networks necessary to initiate and maintain start-up companies. This is an important consideration as Canada builds its economy and diversifies its industry base. The multi-faceted experiences afforded to BioActives trainees will motivate graduates from this CREATE program to innovate using best practices and sustainable workplace models.
